AMS considers the use of Montessori materials essential for quality implementation. To support this, the AMS School Accreditation Commission and AMS Teacher Education Action Commission provide lists of recommended materials for each Montessori classroom level. The intent of this checklist is to provide Montessori teacher education programs with a list of traditional developmentally appropriate activities that Montessori teachers […] are generally expected to be able to present in their classrooms. This list is comprehensive but not exclusive or prescriptive and teacher education program instructors may also present other activities.
Have this to say on which materials are required:
‘In order to ensure a prepared environment that is consistent with AMI standards, each Montessori classroom must be equipped with a complete set of Montessori materials. These materials should be purchased from an AMI authorized manufacturer. A “complete” set of Montessori materials is all materials needed by AMI trained teachers to present the lessons in their albums in the way that their training intended. Materials beyond the scope of the AMI teacher’s training may be considered extraneous with a requirement for them to be removed.’
‘Introduction to the Montessori Materials Lists – The three materials lists that follow are offered for reference purposes. The first list is for the Toddler level of Montessori (16 months – 3 years). The second list is a special list for a level that may be used by some schools called Emerging. The third list is for the Early Childhood level of Montessori. The fourth list is for the Lower Elementary (6-9) level of Montessori and the final list is for the Upper Elementary (9-12) level of Montessori.’ Organized and edited by Michael Dorer, a 132-page list.
MEPI have an assortment of practical forms for program directors, which their teacher trainees use during their practice observations/teaching, including an Early Childhood Materials Inventory PDF
“This inventory checklist outlines the basic essentials for an authentic Montessori classroom. The following items and/or procedures are necessary for an appropriate learning opportunity for the student. This is by no means inclusive of all that should be in a fully equipped and prepared environment. Individual classroom Directors and Interns must observe daily, and using their observation data, create new lessons that meet the needs of the children and increase interest in the environment.”
Have created a remarkable 225-page Materials List, containing an inventory of every piece of primary furniture, book, material, etc. that they have in each class.
Practical Life is the cheapest area to stock because a great majority of the materials – mops and brushes and buckets, cups and bowls and spoons, polishes and sponges and towels – are available in any decent grocery or hardware store and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, any savings on the smaller items will be offset by the expense of the Dress Frames: it costs €300 for the stand, and with the frames averaging about €40, a set of 12 comes to €800. Plus postage.
Because there is a clearly defined curriculum with a prescribed list of materials, the other areas are simpler to set up -even if the Language area requires a whole lot of printing, laminating and cutting- but the materials don’t come cheap. A few examples, taken from the Nienhuis Catalogue:
Many manufacturers offer collections of materials …

A 1913 brochure printed by the House of Childhood (inc) of New York. One of the earliest commercial American catalogs for authentic Montessori equipment, produced shortly after Maria Montessori’s methods gained popularity in the United States (around 1910–1913). The company emphasized selling the materials only as complete sets ($150) , not individual pieces, to preserve the integrity of the method.
